„MICUS study shows way to the economic success of geo-data infrastructures – First time billing model developed“

The technical development of national geo-data infrastructures (GDI) is heavily pushed. However, in many ways this endeavour leads into unknown territory, both from a technical and from an economic point of view. In particular, no models have existed so far that describe how the billing between web services in a GDI network should be organised.

In the study “Billing models for geo-web services” which we conducted for the Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) and the Coordination of Geographic Information and Geographic Information Systems (KOGIS), this question is answered for the Swiss geo-data infrastructure.

The study demonstrates that a consequent, demand-oriented approach has to be chosen for developing billing models, in place of current cost-oriented pricing systems. It is shown how allocation can work using appropriate allocation prices, and how this can be implemented in a GDI.
